DHL Fastest Pit Stop in Montreal
Sauber were the team of the day in the DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award. The Sauber crew performed the fastest tire change of the Canadian Grand Prix, just as they had two weeks before in Monaco. After the Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc was dispatched fastest in his home race, this time it was the turn of Marcus Ericsson, whose pit stop took a mere 2.37 seconds. No other team was faster in Montreal.
Ericsson made use of the safety car deployment after the collision at the start between Lance Stroll and Brendon Hartley to make his one and only pit stop on Lap 1. The Swede then drove the remaining 69 laps on a set of Supersofts and finished in 15th place.
“Marcus did a good job, but unfortunately got stuck behind another car after his pit stop. The team did a good job with a very fast pit stop again,” said Sauber team principal Frederic Vasseur. “Everything is coming together and looking positive, and good steps are being made as a team. We have to stay focused and continue working in this direction for the upcoming races.”
The second and third-fastest stops at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve were executed by Red Bull Racing. The current leaders in the DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award impressed with their customary precision, sending both Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen on their way in just 2.51 seconds.
Ricciardo benefited from the decision to stop one lap after Lewis Hamilton. The overcut was enough for Ricciardo to get past the Mercedes driver in the pits and improve to fifth, in which position he eventually finished the race.
Although Pirelli had brought the three softest tire compounds along – Hypersoft, Ultrasoft and Supersoft – wear on the Canadian F1 circuit was moderate. As a result, the drivers effortlessly got through the entire race distance of 70 laps on a one-stop strategy. Of a total 20 pit stops, ten were completed in under three seconds.
