After celebrating his 20th birthday on Saturday, Max Verstappen capped the occasion in style by winning Sunday’s Malaysian GP with a convincing performance. The Dutchman also became the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to have won two races.

Verstappen seized the lead from Lewis Hamilton at an early stage in the race, proceeded to pull out a gap of almost ten seconds and then managed this lead through to the checkered flag.

Verstappen expressed his satisfaction at the end of the race: “As soon as I passed Lewis, I knew from there onwards I could control the race. The car was really good, and our pace on the soft tire was better than I expected. It was a very physical race and very warm in the car, plus I haven’t been feeling that well this weekend, but we managed to bring it home.”

It was not only Verstappen in the cockpit who did an excellent job in the provisionally final Malaysian GP; the same can also be said of his pit crew. On his one and only visit to the pits on Lap 27, he was serviced in 2.21 seconds, a time that secured the DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award for Red Bull Racing.

Red Bull were just ahead of Ferrari on Sunday in this competition. Sebastian Vettel’s pit stop took only 2.25 seconds, not much more than Verstappen’s. The third quickest stop of the race was performed by Williams. The current holders of the DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award gave Felipe Massa a change of wheels in 2.39 seconds.

Because of the relatively low tire degradation, there were only 20 pit stops. Twelve of these were completed in under three seconds, thereby underlining the sheer professionalism of the pit crews. Nico Hülkenberg and Romain Grosjean were the only drivers to come in for two sets of tires.
