DHL helps teams in the race to the World Solar Challenge 2015

Two teams, one goal: The World Solar Challenge 2015 in Australia. DHL helped teams from Colombia and Belgium ship their equipment Down Under.

Participants in the world’s toughest race for solar cars have to cover more than 3,000 km. However, the World Solar Challenge adventure began well before the start for Team EPM EAFIT from Colombia and Belgian outfit, Punch Powertrain Solar: How to get cars and equipment to the fifth continent?

DHL provided the answer. The company took over transportation of the solar vehicle on a trailer and all its component parts to the World Solar Challenge in Australia on behalf of Team EPM EAFIT, while taking care of export/import documentation and customs clearance. The cargo weighed around two tons. Delivery was made utilizing a standard 20-foot container and followed a special transportation plan.

Everybody’s efforts were rewarded, since both teams arrived on time for the start of the World Solar Challenge 2015 and took the checkered flag after covering 3,000 kilometers! Punch Powertrain Solar finished fifth, while EPM EAFIT placed ninth overall out of a field of 42 teams in total.

The shipment of highly specialized solar-powered vehicles is a job for the specialists. This is where DHL’s many years of experience with racing series and the shipping of cars with special requirements comes into play. DHL currently supplies logistics services to a number of different series, including Formula 1, Formula E, the WTCC, WEC and, as of this year, MotoGP.

The World Solar Challenge has been held since 1987 and is considered to be the world’s toughest race for solar cars. The route runs on public roads, covering around 3,000 kilometers, clean across Australia from Darwin to Adelaide. The main objective of the competition is to promote research and development in the field of solar vehicles and attract the attention of the public at large.

As one of the Founding Partners of the FIA Formula E Championship, DHL is already committed to help advance development of future-oriented technology and sustainable mobility solutions.  Just recently, the racing series became the first world championship ever to receive the top award in the FIA Institute’s sustainability program, the Achievement of Excellence, for its impressive commitment to sustainability and actively caring for the environment.
