VIDEO: Relive sensational MotoGP™ summertime action

Now that the 2016 season has passed the halfway point, let’s relive the sensational action in Rounds 7-10 and ponder (hope for?) a Rossi-Marquez showdown.

The 2016 MotoGP™ has been anything but predictable. The regulation changes and strange weather have made nearly every race a surprise. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that this has also been an unbelievable year of firsts as a number of riders reached the podium for the very first time – Maverick Viñales first career MotoGP™ podium in France, Jack Miller’s first-ever MotoGP™ win in the Netherlands, and Andrea Iannone’s maiden Grand Prix checkered flag at the sport’s historic return to the Red Bull Ring in Austria, and Cal Crutchclow clinched his first Grand Prix victory in the Czech Republic.

What’s similarly unsurprising is to see 9-time world champion Valentino Rossi once again in the hunt for that illusive 10th championship. He’s made the podium every time he’s finished a race – his only problem being not finishing three. Still, the Italian legend is the closest challenger to Marc Marquez, though he trails the Spaniard by a sizable points gap. And no rider has won a premier class title with three or more DNFs in a season since Mick Doohan in 1998. Suffice it to say, he has his work cut out for him. But Valentino is more motivated than ever. “If we give up now, it’s better to stay at home,” he said.

If we give up now, it’s better to stay at home.

Valentino Rossi

The road ahead will certainly be tough if Marquez continues to ride like he did at the TT Cicuit Assen in the Netherlands. The more relaxed and seemingly more mature rider looks like a new man, patiently watching his rivals fall and struggle while he settles for second place. The approach has put – and kept – him out in front with a comfortable lead.

Of course, we’d all like to see a 2016 title fight like the herculean showdown we witnessed in 2015: the legend Rossi versus teammate Jorge Lorenzo, who had succeeded him on the throne. It was undoubtedly some of the best racing ever seen, ending as Lorenzo crossed the line the winner and his teammate charged through the field from the back. It was history made and history changed at the same time, something Rossi feels is still with him as the 2016 season passes the halfway point.

If the past few races are any indication, anything can happen in the final seven rounds of the 2016 MotoGP™ – and we can’t wait to watch it all play out on the track.
