Key Takeaways

  • Great Ocean Road wins 2017 DHL World’s Best Road competition
  • John Winter of Canada heading “down under” for his winning ride with Mark Webber

The Best Coastal Road is now DHL’s World’s Best Road. With more entries than any other in the competition, picking one of the world’s most scenic rides was an easy choice.

Much like the USA’s Route 66, Australia’s Great Ocean Road is one of the first places that come to mind when you ask a motorbike rider where they dream of riding. It’s simply one of the most iconic roads in the world.

“The Great Ocean Road has been my dream place to ride,” wrote Allan Pete from Kenya in his entry.

Rujul Sapute from India shares that sentiment and knows why: “The smooth sweeping lefts and rights besides the ocean make for a mesmerizing motorcycle riding feel.”

Driving along the Great Ocean Road, travelers are subjected to so many sights and sounds that it’s almost too easy to get overwhelmed.

Byron Gallagher from Australia went even further to call it: “A road that allows you the freedom to truly experience what traveling is meant to be.”

One entry said it all: “The Southern coast of Australia is as beautiful as it is diverse,” wrote John Winter of Canada. “Driving along the Great Ocean Road, travelers are subjected to so many sights and sounds that it’s almost too easy to get overwhelmed. Rugged outcrops, rock stack formations, golden beaches, wildlife and wineries are just some of the highlights of the road. Definitely a dream ride on a motorcycle for me!”

John is going to live that dream. The (age & occupation) from Vancouver, Canada, was selected as the global winner of DHL’s 2017 World’s Best Road competition.

“It’s still so hard to believe that it’s real,” says John.

Definitely a dream ride on a motorcycle for me!

The Great Ocean Road

This 243-kilometer (150-mile) stretch along Australia’s southeastern coast takes you between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Allansford. Built by returned soldiers and dedicated to soldiers killed during the Great War, the road is the world’s largest war memorial. Winding left and right along a breathtaking Pacific Ocean coastline, riders get a one-of-a-kind experience as they pass the towering 12 Apostles, native wildlife, world-famous surf breaks, rich rainforests and misty waterfalls along the way. There’s so much to do on this two-lane coastal odyssey, that entire websites are dedicated to helping visitors explore the region. It’s considered one of the world’s most scenic coastal roads, and it’s an important tourist attraction in the region.
