Key Takeaways

  • Gewandhausorchester to enchant audiences in six European countries, Japan and Taiwan
  • The tour celebrates the 90th birthday of conductor Herbert Blomstedt

The world-famous Gewandhausorchester is preparing for its autumn tour across Europe and East Asia, supported by DHL logistics experts from DHL Trade Fairs & Events.

After a short summer break, the Leipzig-based Gewandhausorchester is hitting the road again. Between October 22 and November 17, the tour leads from Great Britain via France and Luxembourg, to Germany, Austria, Hungary and finally to Japan and Taiwan.

The Gewandhausorchester will perform historic pieces by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Schubert, reflecting the 275-year-long tradition of the orchestra. The tour will be conducted by classical music icon Herbert Blomstedt, one of the most remarkable conductors around. The Swedish musician celebrated his 90th birthday in July this year and shows no sign of stopping. Blomstedt and the Gewandhausorchester share a long, fruitful history. He was the Gewandhauskapellmeister from 1998 to 2005 and currently holds the title of conductor laureate with the orchestra. Blomstedt is a mainstay of the ensemble and the entire city of Leipzig. In October, he will receive Leipzig’s medal of honor.

Over the last two decades, Blomstedt has conducted the orchestra on countless occasions, both at home in Leipzig and on famous stages around the world. The tour through Europe and East Asia will celebrate his achievements.

As Official Logistics Partner to one of the globe’s most prestigious and most traveled musical ensembles, DHL is proud to be the Presenting Partner of their upcoming tour. Ahead of each concert, DHL will transport six tons of freight including everything from the unique and irreplaceable instruments, to music stands and the musicians’ wardrobe. DHL will use temperature-controlled transport solutions to ensure a safe and timely delivery, enabling the tour to run smoothly.

More than logistics

The collaboration between the Gewandhausorchester and DHL has started in 2005 and goes beyond the logistics of touring. The two companies share many common values, working on special projects that have an impact on the community. As part of their educational projects, the Gewandhausorchester and DHL regularly organize special "Meet the Artist" events, allowing young people to get access to classical music more easily. Secondary-school students who are interested in classical music meet a panel of young musicians from the Gewandhausorchester. The ensemble members present their instruments and provide a glimpse of what life as a professional musician is like. In October, a few musicians of the Gewandhausorchester will meet with students in Baden-Baden before the big concert at the Festspielhaus on October 27.

The get-togethers between musicians and students have been inspired by DHL’s GoTeach program that aims to improve education opportunities of young people, especially those from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. Together with the non-profit organization Teach First, the Gewandhausorchester and DHL have already organized Meet the Artist events in the United States, England, Austria and Germany.
