DHL Presents Gewandhausorchester: Another Moving European Tour

One aspect that sets the Gewandhausorchester apart from its contemporaries is the frequency with which the players perform in concert halls the world over. Their ability to feel at home, no matter where the players are in the world and the talents they showcase in bringing their unique “Klang” to cities across Asia, the Americas and Europe is unique to the Leipzig-based musicians.

The orchestra’s performances while out on the road do not disappoint, as a number of fans in cities across Europe discovered in February when the Gewandhausorchester spent two weeks traveling with violinist Julian Rachlin. After concerts in Brussels, Luxembourg City, Madrid, Freiburg, Turin, Milan, Munich, Cologne, Stuttgart and Dortmund, the world’s largest civic symphony orchestra was treated to repeated “Bravos” and standing ovations.

In Milan we sent a video team to capture the moments behind the scenes before the players took to the stage of La Scala – offering you unique insights into the planning and transport that goes into such a concert tour. In Cologne, two musicians met up with students from area schools that benefit from the Teach First Deutschland program to introduce them to the life of a classical performer. In Stuttgart, conductor Riccardo Chailly celebrated his birthday from atop the podium in front of a full house.

Though the spring tour has wrapped, the Gewandhausorchester will continue to perform at their three venues in Leipzig. Their next tour will see them in Paris, Vienna and London in October, but you can stay tuned to In Motion and to the orchestra’s blog to learn more about what the players are up to year-round.
