100 years on tour: Anniversary concert to be streamed live - presented by DHL

More than 250 years of tradition and a century on tour - the world-famous Gewandhausorchester has been playing at major venues around the world for the past 100 years, enchanting audiences in Europe, Asia, Australia, North America and South America.

Next weekend, the Gewandhausorchester will be celebrating a century of concert tours with a very special event. Music lovers can watch the anniversary concert at the Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig on Friday 18th November (start time 8pm CET) via a live stream here on DHL InMotion.

This anniversary concert is just the beginning of a wonderful weekend of music. On Saturday 19th November and Sunday 20th November, Herbert Blomstedt will conduct two guest performance concerts at the Philharmonie Essen and the Alte Oper Frankfurt. The program will include works that the Gewandhausorchester performed on its first tour a hundred years ago. This first trip abroad in November 1916 was to Switzerland.

"Since its inception, the Gewandhausorchester has served the citizens of Leipzig who founded it," says Professor Andreas Schulz, Director of the Gewandhaus. "This unique commitment right from the start to performing on a regular basis for a broad-based public is a special feature that we are proud of. Plus of course our unmistakable sound."

The Gewandhausorchester has long sought to convey its enthusiasm for symphonic music to audiences around the world: 1,677 symphony concerts outside Leipzig (no fewer than 1,196 of these in Europe) have taken place since its first tour of Switzerland one hundred years ago. "We are proud to be a part of the European musical scene and are delighted that we are able to share our passion with so many people today," adds Professor Schulz.

Consistent with this concept is an initiative by Teach First and DHL which, together with the members of the Gewandhausorchester, have organized a master class for secondary schools. The musicians will demonstrate their instruments, answer questions and provide expert insight into the world of classical music and the people who make it. The youngsters will have the opportunity to sense the excitement that the Gewandhausorchester has been generating in audiences around the world for more than 100 years.
