Solid FC Bayern advance in Champions League
FC Bayern had the upper hand coming into their second-leg clash with Arsenal after winning the first leg 5-1, and after another dominating performance with the same score in the second match, FC Bayern were deservedly through to the Champions League quarterfinals.
In the second match, FC Bayern benefitted from a penalty that saw Arsenal go a man down, and cruised to the decisive victory from that point on.
This particular trip to the quarterfinals is a special one for FC Bayern: it marks the club’s sixth straight quarterfinal appearance – a club record – and their 16th appearance overall. That’s the most of any team.
The Bundesliga season is right on track as well for FC Bayern, with the team going undefeated since the winter break and their winter training camp in Doha. They’ve shutout their opponents in the last three matches, including an 8-0 drubbing of Hamburg at the end of February at home in the Allianz Arena.
We have a comfortable cushion at the top now, but we have to stay focused. Many matches await us.

FC Bayern’s most recent Bundesliga triumph – a 3-0 win over Frankfurt in Allianz Arena – was a big day for one player in particular. Jerome Boateng, sidelined for 108 days after an injury, played his first match of 2017, coming on as a sub in the second half.
"It was an incredible feeling to be back on the pitch again," Boateng said. "I'm very happy, and I hope I can play for the rest of the season without injury."
The win left FC Bayern ten points clear of RB Leipzig at the top of the league table, and Boateng’s return will hopefully help ensure Bayern’s sizeable lead remains intact for the rest of the season. FC Bayern face RB Leipzig in the second-to-last match of the season, and will be hoping to lock up the league title by then.
FC Bayern’s next opponent in the Champions League will be decided by a draw among the final eight teams on March 17, but possible opponents so far include Barcelona, title-holders Real Madrid, and fellow Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.
Dortmund are favored to be FC Bayern’s semifinal opponent in the German Cup, with Sportfruende Lotte from the third league taking the role of the underdog in Dortmund’s quarterfinal match in the German Cup.
