Five things you need to know about the DHL Impact Player

The DHL Impact Player Award celebrates the efforts of those Rugby Sevens players who enable great things to happen on the pitch. Here’s what you need to know.

1. It’s about celebrating players who make a great impact on the pitch

Some say Rugby is the ultimate team sport, the only sport where the group is more important than the individual – where TEAM really means Together Everyone Achieves More. It’s true, in Rugby the team relies on everyone playing for each other, understanding their roles and positions and executing their skills to the best of their ability. But a few players stand out in every match, those who performances have made the most telling impact on the game. The DHL Impact Player Award celebrates those top performances

2. It’s all in the detail – about tracking the stats

We know a little bit about track & trace, so we’re putting that technology to good use. With our DHL Performance Tracker, we track the essential statistics in each match – the tackles, offloads, carries and line-breaks – and award one point to a player each time they successfully complete any of those actions. The player with the highest points score at each tournament is named the DHL Impact Player Award winner. In the event of a tie, the Strike Rate and Tries Scored will be taken in to account. The strike rate is a player's average score per match over the course of the Series.

3. It’s been an impactful series so far

France's Virimi Vakatawa returned to the French Sevens side at the HSBC Dubai Sevens in sensational form and with immediate impact. With his 10 tackles, five line breaks, 19 carries and seven offloads, the powerful Frenchman had a hand in all things good about France as they lifted the Bowl on day two of the opening round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. His performance won him the first-ever DHL Impact Player Award for the Dubai round.

Every time I get the ball I just want to run and score tries. Attacking is my favorite part of the game.

Scotland’s Lee Jones played some sensational rugby at the HSBC Cape Town Sevens to become DHL’s Impact Player there. Known for his pace, strength in the contact and an unquestionable eye for the try line, Jones demonstrated all of these qualities in Cape Town. With 15 carries, 7 line breaks, 4 offloads and 15 tackles, the Scottish winger led his team to a dominating 19-0 win over England to take the Bowl victory.
