DHL Fastest Lap Award: 2016 FORMULA 1 ROLEX AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
It was not quite enough in the end for a podium finish on home turf, but Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo was really pleased with fourth place after the first grand prix of the year. The Australian crowned his fine performance on Lap 49 with the fastest lap of the 2016 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix. At an average speed of 214.510 km/h, he easily achieved the fastest lap of the race, posting a 1:28.997. Sebastian Vettel set the next fastest time on Lap 23 with a 1:29.951 – almost a second slower than Ricciardo.
“Today was fun for me, it was so good to be back racing”, said Daniel Ricciardo. “I came on the radio more than once expressing my joy to just being out there competing. That joy was emphasized by having a good car underneath me. I was sitting in a podium spot towards the end and I was hoping the tires would last but I knew they weren’t going to hold and I would have to pit again. But fourth is still a good result and I’m happy we’re not that far off Mercedes and Ferrari.”
After the opening race, Daniel Ricciardo is the first to lead the 2016 DHL Fastest Lap Award. The 22 drivers will get their next chance to score points towards this award in the 2016 Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit (April 1st-4th).
This means for teams that they have to move their cargo from Melbourne to Sakhir as quickly as possible. While the cars are freighted by air, other tackle needed has long since been sent on its way by sea to Bahrain. You see, each team has several sets of garage equipment that are used in rotation for races overseas and are shipped by sea.
