Happy Holidays: FC Bayern flying high in all competitions

As the players head home for a well-deserved break after an intense first half of the season, FC Bayern Munich have plenty to look forward to in 2016.

An eight-point lead in the Bundesliga and a challenging but manageable draw (Juventus) in the first knock-out round of the Champions League: exactly the kind of presents FC Bayern Munich had hoped to find under the tree for Christmas.

“We can speak of a good first half of the season, we're fully on target,” said keeper Manuel Neuer after the team’s final match of 2015, a 1-0 win on the road against Hanover.

The first half of the season was only marred by two blemishes: a 3-1 loss to Mönchengladbach at the start of December, and a 2-0 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League. Their 46 points in the first half of the Bundesliga nearly set a team record, falling short by just one point of the mark they set two years ago.

Without question, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller have been key to Bayern’s success so far this season. The two men are second and third, respectively, on the Bundesliga’s top scorers’ list with 15 and 14 goals each. For Müller, that represents a personal best in a season – and there are still 17 more matches to play. Lewandowski is also second on the top scorers’ list in the Champions League with seven goals, and Müller is tied for fourth with five goals.

“A huge compliment to my players. They've done a superb job throughout the year – in the Bundesliga, in the Champions League and in the German Cup.”

Pep Guardiola, FCB Coach

While the Bayern community learned with a bit of sadness that Guardiola will not be returning next season as the team’s coach (he’ll be replaced by Italy’s Carlo Ancelotti), there was also positive news at the end of 2015 as Thomas Müller, Jerome Boateng, Javi Martínez and Xabi Alonso signed contract extensions.

“We can be glad that four key players will be staying at FC Bayern in the long run,” said team board chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Looking ahead to 2016, Guardiola and the players know that this is the last opportunity they will get to achieve the coveted triple of Bundesliga, Champions League, and German Cup titles together. This will be the focus of the team’s upcoming winter training camp in Doha, Qatar.
