FC Bayern through to Champions League semis

The slim margin of victory in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal between FC Bayern and Benfica left a glimmer of hope for fans of the Portuguese side, but Bayern prevailed in the second leg thanks to an excellent match by Arturo Vidal.

Away goals are valuable currency in the Champions League, and Artuto Vidal made a very large deposit toward the end of the first half of FC Bayern Munich’s second-leg match against Benfica in Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz.

His ripping goal tied the match at 1-1, but the away goal meant Benfica would have a much harder time winning on aggregate goals after Bayern won the first leg 1-0 in Munich. After Vidal scored, Bayern remained comfortably in control of their fate for the rest of the match.

Thomas Müller added a second goal for good measure shortly after the break, and by the time Benfica evened the score at 2-2 in the 76th minute, Bayern’s ticket to the semifinals was as good as secure.

Vidal, a member of the Chilean national team, has proven to be an essential part of Bayern’s team this season.

“He's scoring decisive goals, he's working hard, he's strong in one-on-ones and unpredictable because he plays a bit irrationally. This irrationality is good for us.”

Matthias Sammer, FC Bayern Sporting Director

Adding to Bayern’s good fortune was another win in the Bundesliga at the weekend, with Robert Lewandowski netting two goals and Vidal adding a third in a 3-0 victory over Schalke. Bayern are seven points clear of Dortmund at the top of the table. If Bayern win two of their remaining four matches, they will secure their fourth-straight league title.

Bayern are set to face Atlético Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League, with the first leg taking place on April 27 and the second at home in Bayern’s Allianz Arena on May 3. The semifinal of the German Cup is April 19 at home against Werder Bremen.

With Bayern nearing the pinnacle of the season, the excitement among fans from Munich to China is growing every day.
