Bayern eliminate German Cup holders in convincing win

In the 2014/15 German Cup competition, FC Bayern Munich entered the competition as defending champs but were eliminated by another Bundesliga side. This year, title holders Wolfsburg suffered the same fate at the hands of the Bavarians.

Wolfsburg must be cursing their luck: as defending German Cup title holders, they already had a target on their backs. But then to draw Germany's most successful football club in just the second round? That proved to be too much.

What's it like on the road for the Champions League?

FC Bayern Munich are currently beating just about every team they play, and Wolfsburg were no exception in their German Cup clash. After just 35 minutes, Bayern were up 3-0 and on their way to a comfortable 3-1 win to progress to the Round of 16. Despite losing last week against Arsenal in the group stage of the Champions League, Bayern quickly bounced back and have reestablished the fact that they are absolutely the team to beat.

“A 3-0 lead by half-time in Wolfsburg: that sends out a powerful signal.”

Bayern's Arjen Robben

Thomas Müller, who scored two of Bayern’s goals, called his team’s first half performance “flawless.”

“We were in control and our positional play was good,” Müller said. “We gave Wolfsburg no breathing space at all and were rewarded.”

Bayern’s opponent in the next round has yet to be determined, but a local derby against 1860 Munich is a possibility after their Cup win against Mainz. The draw for the next round takes place on November 1.

In the Bundesliga, Bayern are still on cruise control at the top of the table, most recently dispatching FC Cologne 4-0 at home in the Allianz Arena. Next up for Pep Guardiola’s squad in the Bundesliga is a Friday night match against Eintracht Frankfurt.

They also lead Group F in the Champions League despite the loss against Arsenal – their only blemish in all competitions in what has otherwise been a perfect season. Despite the loss, it was a trip to remember for DHL driver Manfred, who made the drive from Munich to London with all of the team's equipment.

Whether it’s the German Cup, Bundesliga, or the Champions League, DHL is proud to be FC Bayern Munich’s logistics and full-service e-commerce partner. We’ll be following them all season long right here on InMotion.
