DHL Fastest Lap Award: 2016 FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX OF EUROPE

The first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix in Baku and the performance of championship leader Nico Rosberg can best be summed up in three words: "A perfect weekend". For the second time in his career, the Mercedes driver clinched the grand slam of pole, win, fastest lap and race lead on all laps. This is the sort of performance that truly warrants the hashtag #GreatIsInTheDetail.

Right at the start, Rosberg in his Silver Arrow with the number 6 on its side sailed away from the pursuing pack. Like most of his opponents, he was on a one-stop strategy. His single visit to the pits came on the 21st lap. Thanks to his comfortable lead, Rosberg was able to take good care of his tires, power unit and brakes.

Consequently, he had enough in reserve to seize the fastest lap from team-mate Lewis Hamilton just before the checkered flag on Lap 48 out of 51. What's more, he did it on soft tires that had already had 27 laps taken out of them! Rosberg's time of 1:46.485 minutes was just over three tenths faster than the reigning champion who finished the race in fifth place.

Rosberg was also the clear leader when the drivers' ten fastest laps were averaged out. His average time of 1:47.145 minutes was one and a half tenths faster than that of Sebastian Vettel who finished the race as runner-up behind Rosberg. "I really felt at one with the car in a way I've never felt before," said Nico Rosberg. "I didn't have the feeling that something would go wrong at any point today. The car was awesome this weekend, so thank you so much to the team for this."

With this fourth fastest lap of the season, Rosberg has now extended his lead in the 2016 DHL Fastest Lap Award. The Silver Arrows man is the only driver who has managed to set the fastest lap more than once in the last eight grands prix, namely in Bahrain, Russia, Canada and now Baku.

From Baku, F1 now proceeds to Spielberg where the FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX OF AUSTRIA 2016 will be held at the Red Bull Ring on the weekend of 1st - 3rd July.
